Why Disco Electric?

Weird name for a creative writing company, isn’t it? Well, yes it is! But, like every interesting name, there’s an amusing story to it.
It all began way back in 2010, when my housemate and I were recovering from a highly-successful Friday evening at the raffles in Canberra (oh yeah, we’re wild). The Saturday morning, we’d planned to go shopping, as I was looking for a particular jacket; I knew the exact style, and cut, and fit, but I cared not for the brand. So we took ourselves off to the factory outlets, on a mission to find this elusive jacket treasure. About forty five minutes into our quest, my housemate needed to go to the bathroom – so I waited outside the corridor. While standing there, I looked down the rows of shops and saw one I’d never heard of before: up in lights, above the doors, read Disco Electric. “Disco Electric? What sort of a shop is Disco Electric?!” I wondered to myself. When my housemate returned, I pointed it out to her, and she was equally-bemused. So we both started walking towards this mystery shop, curious as to what we might find inside. However, our curiosity was short-lived, as after taking about five steps we realised that our hungover selves had both failed to notice the large supporting columns hiding some rather-important letters in the name…the mysterious Disco Electric was, in fact, a Discount Electrical warehouse. Regardless, I told my housemate that day that, whenever I start my own business, I’m going to name it Disco Electric – cool name, funny story, and the rest is history! |
